Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Tote Revisited – Beige Vs Black

fashion blogger mia mia mine wearing a moncler cape coat from mytheresaYou guys know how much I love my Saint Laurent handbags, and the Rive Gauche tote happens to be a top pick for spring and summer. Every year once the weather warms up, I always get so much usage out of that tote that I decided it was time to invest in the black one as well. Since I often get a lot of questions about this bag, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to revisit my original review (HERE) and break down the key differences between the black and beige Saint Laurent Rive Gauche totes. If you’ve been stuck on which color to go after, keep scrolling for everything you need to know about them.

Key Differences

At first glance, the only difference between the two bags seem to be the color. One features a black base with a white logo while the other with black text against a beige background. However, they’re actually made from two different materials. The black tote is constructed from canvas, which makes it a little more durable while the beige tote is made from linen. The linen one does feature a protective coating, so you can wipe it clean as needed. My only caveat here with the black one is that it tends to collect lint – but it’s nothing that a lint roller can’t fix.

In terms of functionality, I prefer the black canvas tote when I’m traveling since it’s less likely to get dirty. That’s not to say the beige one will as I have seen so many other influencer friends travel with it and it still looks amazing. I just prefer not to carry it on flights for my own peace of mind. That said, when I’m at the beach, you’ll most likely see me with the beige tote.

Sizing Updates

I purchased my first Saint Laurent Rive Gauche tote back in 2019, and the brand has since launched the bag in a new size and in many other fabric and color combinations. Both my beige and black totes are the original size, measuring 18.7″ x 14″ x 6.2″. For reference, the smaller one measures 15.25″ x 12.25″ x 7″ (HERE).

The larger size is still my favorite because it makes it that much more versatile. You can treat it as a weekender bag, beach bag, or carry-on tote. You can even use it as a work bag since it’s big enough to hold any laptop plus more. That said, it’s probably not the best option when you’re errands and want to be hands free since it is so large. When deciding which size to go with, it’s probably best to evaluate how you intend to use it. If you want something for everyday, the smaller one might be a better fit.

How Have They Held Up?

Both bags have held up well even despite regular use. I feel that both my bags still look brand new – even the beige one – after all this time (it’s almost 3 years old now). I love these bags during the warmer months because they offer just enough structure without weighing you down. I’ve just been so impressed with how sturdy they are. That said, if you’re one to over stuff your bags, you will likely experience some creasing and a loss of shape over time. However, with proper care, the bag shouldn’t be compromised. I believe my Rive Gauche totes still look the way they do because I keep them stuffed when I’m not using them. If the look of a worn-in bag bothers you, then I would suggest doing the same!

My Overall Thoughts

An oversized shopper will always be in style, especially when it looks as classy as the Saint Laurent Rive Gauche tote. You really can’t go wrong with either the beige or black one since they can be used interchangeably and for any purpose. I loved the bag so much that I had to have it in both colors. But I will say that the black one is more seasonless and can be carried year-round whereas the beige one tends to work best when it’s warm out. No matter which color you go with though, you won’t be disappointed.
