Winter Style Guide: What To Wear To A Formal Event

comments
Winter dressing usually consists of comfy clothes and heavy coats, so when the opportunity arises to get dressed up, I’m usually stumped on what to wear. If you’re the same way, now is the perfect time to secure a few new pieces that take the guesswork out of going glam. I highly suggest snagging a few extra pieces to get you through Valentine’s Day as well as any winter formal that might come your way. To ensure your selections are stylish and cold weather-friendly, opt for seasonal fabrics, such as crushed velvet, satin and luxurious knits. You can then spruce up your look further with sparkly accessories. If you’re not sure where to start, keep scrolling for my guide on what to wear to a winter formal below!

Valentine’s Day
Red is one of my favorite colors but it’s not what I usually reach for when it comes to formal wear. The only two exceptions to this are Christmas and Valentine’s Day. That said, a slinky red dress is absolutely striking and flattering on anyone for the upcoming holiday. If you prefer muted colors but still want to feel fancy, moody florals and little black dresses with a sexy neckline are great alternatives.

Date Night
There aren’t many reasons to dress up from now until spring. That’s why the occasional date night is such a nice way to change up the pace. There’s a ton of flexibility in terms what to wear since you can layer up and peel things off as needed. If I want to stay cozy and chic, a sweater dress is pretty much fail-proof. If I’m feeling a little more playful, I’ll go for a two-piece set or trendy jumpsuit.

Wedding
Winter weddings are very much a thing and dressing the part can be especially challenging when it’s frigid out. Luckily, you can always add tights to make the temps more bearable. Styling aside, I always resort to velvet and jewel tones for a seasonably appropriate look. That translates into emerald green, rust and maroon tones – I love that you can rewear them winter after winter.

Girl’s Night Out
From birthday dinners to bachelorette parties and night-outs, I’ll never refuse the opportunity to get dolled up for an evening with the girls. When you’re unsure of the dress code, a sweater dress with tall boots or a matching knit set are both photo-worthy and so chic. Of course, a sexy knit top and leather pants work just as well if warmth is your top priority.
